What Are Mood Disorders?

Mood disorders are a broad umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of serious mental health disorders. A mood disorder will affect your emotional health, causing symptoms such as persistent and intense feelings of anger, sadness, and/or euphoria or elation. Two of the most widely known types of mood disorders are depression and bipolar disorder, although there are others.

If you have a mood disorder, your symptoms can affect your day-to-day functioning. You may find it more difficult to carry out tasks at work or school, and you may find that your relationships suffer as a result of your symptoms.

Types and Symptoms of Mood Disorders

There are far too many types and subtypes of mood disorders to list here, but here are a few common ones that our counselors frequently provide mood disorder treatment for.

Major depressive disorder

Persistent, intense feelings of sadness and hopelessness, and lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities

Dysthymia

Persistent, low-grade irritable or depressed mood, with symptoms lasting at least two years

Bipolar Disorder

Periods of intense depression alternating with periods of euphoria or elation and impulsive, risky behaviors

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

Symptoms such as mood swings, anger, depression, or anxiety that begin one week prior to menstruation and resolve following the onset of menstruation

Depressive disorders are also commonly triggered by substance use or a significant medical diagnosis (e.g. cancer).

Mood Disorder Treatments at Let All Thrive

Our mood disorder treatment specialists start with a thorough assessment. Then, we’ll collaborate with you to identify the most appropriate treatment options based on your needs and goals. Some examples of mood disorder treatment options include:

In many cases, psychotherapy pairs well with antidepressant and mood-stabilizing medications. For patients with bipolar disorder in particular, it’s necessary to take medications continuously throughout their lifetime. Although bipolar disorder is manageable and treatable, it is not curable. If you have bipolar disorder and you’ve been prescribed medications, please continue to follow your medicine regimen even during periods when you feel well. Discontinuing your maintenance medications can lead to a harmful relapse of symptoms.
